Outokumpu is best known for its history of mining industry. The town has nearly 8000 inhabitants and it is situated on the western border of North Karelia.

The most interesting sight in Outokumpu is the old mine with its museum of mining. There are also exhibitions of stones and minerals, and a restaurant. The nature and fishing centre of Outokumpu is a great destination for families with children.
