The city of Joensuu was founded by the Czar Nicholas I of Russia in 1848. Today Joensuu is the capital of the region of North Karelia and has much to offer tourists.

Joensuu City Hall (1914), designed by Eliel Saarinen, has always been an important part of the Joensuu cityscape. Nowadays the building houses the city's central government, the Joensuu City Theatre and the Theatre Restaurant.

Joensuu Art Museum ONNI, located on Kirkkokatu, is a treasure trove with its permanent collections, changing exhibitions and icon collection.

Carelicum, across from the Market Square, was reopened in January 2011. There you'll find the exhibitions of the North Karelian Museum as well as Carelicum Services.

The Joensuu City Orchestra offers high-quality concerts for all music lovers and a must for young people is Ilosaarirock in July. Joensuu Music Festival has its 2. part 9.-12.7. with several concerts in Utra Uittotupa Arena.

Botania is a botanical garden and tropical butterfly garden with also an outdoor garden open year-round.

Local cruises from Joensuu on Pielisjoki River and Lake Pyhäselkä daily untill 14 August:
At 12.00 and 6 pm cruise on Pielisjoki River and at 3 pm local cruise on Lake Pyhäselkä ( minumum 10 passangers).

Joensuu has a relatively young population, thanks to the University of Eastern FinlandKarelia University of Applied Sciences and large number of
other educational institutions.

The municipalities of Kiihtelysvaara and Tuupovaara were merged with the city of Joensuu in 2005, Eno and Pyhäselkä in 2009. The total population of the city is 73 000, spread over a surface area of 2751 km2
