Traveling to North Karelia in Lakeland Finland is easy: there are good flight connections from across Europe to Helsinki, followed by a domestic flight of about one hour to Joensuu. Alternatively, you can choose a scenic train journey from Helsinki, which takes only around 4.5 hours.
Perhaps the easiest way to travel to North Karelia is to arrive by car via highways 5 or 6. By car, you can stop at any destination you want along the way and have the freedom to move around according to your own wishes and schedules.

If you want to arrive in North Karelia ecologically by train, you can admire the beautiful scenery along the way. Joensuu can be reached by rail from the south with a direct train connection. For example, when arriving from Tampere and Jyväskylä, there is one change on the way.
Rail buses departing from Joensuu railway station operate from the eastern side of Pielinen via Lieksa to Nurmes. By train, you can get close to destinations in the Bomba area, for example, and to Koli, when you get off at Vuonislahti. If you want to go to the Nightwish exhibition center in Kitee, for example, you can get off at Kitee station when arriving from the south.
Finnair flies daily between Joensuu and Helsinki. You can continue your journey from airport for instance by bus, rental car or taxi.
Kuopio Airport is also a good option when you have a plan to come to North Karelia as the airport is only 1,5 hours drive away from Joensuu. There are three daily flights from Helsinki-Vantaa airport and back. From Kuopio to North Karelia the easiest way to reach the destination is to drive by own car or jump in a bus.
You can reach North Karelia from different parts of Finland by bus. For example, there is a bus connection from Jyväskylä, Kuopio and Oulu to Joensuu without transfers.
You can also find bus schedules within the region in Matkahuolto's timetables. Joensuu's public transport serves internal city transfers and takes you within walking distance of many interesting destinations in the city center.
A new connection has started operating between Münich and Joensuu with Flixbus. Travel time is approximately 45-54 hours (two days).
