Military History near the Eastern Border

Finland's military history can be seen in many places in North Karelia. For example, the Continuation War defense line in Öykkösenvaara in Ilomantsi is open to everyone and free to visit. In Ilomantsi, the Möhkön ironworks, the Parppeinvaara runokylä and the Fighter's House also present the history of our wars in their exhibitions. Ilomantsi Battlegrounds Trail

The new circular route in Ilomantsi brings together historical sites in easternmost Finland. There are over 30 military historical sites along the same route. The 150 km long route offers a lot of information about the events and sites of the Winter and Continuation War, both on the ground and in an online environment.

Ilomantsi – Memory of War in Exhibitions and Battlefields

Öykkösenvaara

The Öykkösenvaara military historical area has an authentic Continuation War defense line and information boards about the battles. It is six kilometers from the area to Möhkö ironworks, where the Möhkö in War exhibition is on display, among other things. Petkeljärvi National Park is also nearby, where you can find a trench and dugout from the Winter War along your hiking trail.

Combatant's House

The exhibitions at the Fighter's House in Hattuvaara, Ilomantsi, deal with the most important battles of the Finnish state for our independence.

Parppeinvaara Rune Singer's Village

At the Parppeinvaara poetry village, you can explore the hut of Border General Raappana and hear about the battles and history of the Ilomantsi area on a guided tour.

Museum Eliel

Centrally located Museum Eliel exhibits the Karelian history from the perspective of a woman: how was the life and a position of a woman during the wars, time of peace and societal changes have shaped throughout the history?

Bunker Museum

In the Bunker Museum, you can see authentic fortification structures and anti-tank guns from the Salpalinja. The museum area also includes a Veterans Park, with a monument to war veterans and the builders of the Salpalinja.

In Lieksa, you can learn about military history at the Rukajärvi Centre, which serves at the Lieksa railway station. The centre displays, among other things, artifacts, video and audio tapes, and photographic material donated by veterans.
