Military History near the Eastern Border
Finland's military history can be seen in many places in North Karelia. For example, the Continuation War defense line in Öykkösenvaara in Ilomantsi is open to everyone and free to visit. Ilomantsi Battlegrounds Trail
The new circular route in Ilomantsi brings together historical sites in easternmost Finland. There are over 30 military historical sites along the same route. The 150 km long route offers a lot of information about the events and sites of the Winter and Continuation War, both on the ground and in an online environment.

Öykkösenvaara
The Öykkösenvaara military historical area has an authentic Continuation War defense line and information boards about the battles. It is six kilometers from the area to Möhkö ironworks, where the Möhkö in War exhibition is on display, among other things. Petkeljärvi National Park is also nearby, where you can find a trench and dugout from the Winter War along your hiking trail.

Museum Eliel

Bunker Museum
In the Bunker Museum, you can see authentic fortification structures and anti-tank guns from the Salpalinja. The museum area also includes a Veterans Park, with a monument to war veterans and the builders of the Salpalinja.

Rukajärvi-keskus
In Lieksa, you can learn about military history at the Rukajärvi Centre, which serves at the Lieksa railway station. The centre displays, among other things, artifacts, video and audio tapes, and photographic material donated by veterans.
Änäkäinen
The memories of the war are still visible in the terrain in the Änäkäinen recreation area, where the Salpalinja outpost base has been reconstructed. Änäkäinen is a good day trip destination, but there is also a lean-to for overnight stays in the area.
