This is Where the Story Begins

Welcome to the land of legends and myths! In North Karelia, stories live on – stories that trace the outlines of the origins of an entire nation, its culture, and its history.

Many important works of Finnish culture, such as the Kalevala, the compositions of Jean Sibelius, and the paintings of Finnish national artists, found their inspiration in the nature of North Karelia and its surrounding culture. You can immerse yourself in the numerous stories and turning points of history, for example, at Parppeinvaara in Ilomantsi, in Möhkö, or along the Sotatie (War Road). Among the most important sources of inspiration for the Kalevala and the national artists are Koli and Bomba. You can experience the Orthodox tradition at the Valamo Monastery in Heinävesi.

European Heritage Label

Parppeinvaara in Ilomantsi – the village of rune singers – bears the European Heritage Label “Kalevala.” The scholar Elias Lönnrot collected extensive material in this region for both the Kalevala and the Kanteletar. Today, the village cultivates the tradition of rune singing in its museums, exhibitions, and atmospheric historical buildings.

The European Heritage Label is an award given by the European Union to places that have played a significant role in the formation of modern Europe. The Kalevala holds an important place not only in the origins and development of the Finnish nation but also in the identity of modern Europe: the traditions of the Kalevala continue to inspire new scientific, artistic, and cultural interpretations.
