Vekaruksen luontopolku

The Vekarus nature trail is an exciting nature destination about 2 km long, circling around as many as three rapids. There are three campfire sites in the area, the one closest to the parking area being accessible.

Description

The Vekarus nature trail along the Kotajoki river offers solid nature experiences in a uniquely compact package. In the middle of the circular route roar three rapids: Myllykoski, Kalliokoski, and Vekaruskoski.

The route is marked with orange dots and partly follows the 35 km long Paimenpoika trail.

The long gravel road section to the area's parking lot is well marked. The roar of the rapids and the magnificent spruce forests immediately immerse you into the hiking atmosphere from the edge of the parking area.

The first 200 meters from the parking lot to the shelter by Vekaruskoski are accessible, although on a steep outdoor path. The rest of the route has moderate elevation changes. Rocky and rooty sections may make walking difficult. The suspension bridge over Myllykoski is safe but might feel quite thrilling to a timid walker.

The campfire site, shelter, and restroom by Vekaruskoski are accessible. At the other two rapids, there are lean-tos and restrooms. All fire sites in the area have firewood supply.

The ease of use is charming at the Vekaruskoski campfire site. Meanwhile, the Myllykoski lean-to is a perfect resting spot for those craving adventure, as it is built on a narrow rocky ridge surrounded by water. Myllykoski lean-to may be one of the most thrilling campfire sites in Finland.

Along the route, there is also a six-person rental cottage, which also features a lakeside sauna with a pier, a restroom, and a cooking shelter. The rental cottage can be reserved year-round.

Author tips:
  • In winter, a snowmobile route crosses over the Vekarus Rapids. In spring, you can see paddlers enjoying the rapids' foams. The rapids are level 2 in terms of paddling classification, requiring both a helmet and skills stronger than beginner's white water kayaking.
  • The Vekarus nature trail is not maintained during winter, but you can hike with snowshoes or cross-country ski in deep snow in the area.
