Ukonsärkkä - The realm of old bark pines
The beautiful ridge of Ukonsärkkä with its old forests is a great day trip destination in the easternmost part of Lieksa. A hike made in the peace of nature rewards its visitors.
Description
The Ukonsärkkä route is a 4.7-kilometre long point-to-point trail on a ridge, an excellent daylight hike with a beautiful scenic path. There are markers at both ends of the route. Along the route at Ukonlampi, there is a lean-to and a dry toilet by the pond. A round trip from the northern end to the lean-to is approx. 8 kilometres, and from the southern end, 2 km.
The Ukonsärkkä area has been transferred from the status of protected nature management forest to the old forests protection program. The northern part of Ukonsärkkä has recently been thinned.
Safety
- Open fires are prohibited during forest or grass fire warnings and strong winds.
- Be careful - do not leave a fire unattended. The last person leaving, ensure the fire is out.
- On rainy and wet weather, the boardwalks, stones, and roots can be very slippery.
- Carry first aid supplies with you.

Location & Parking
From south of Lieksa, go to Hattuvaarantie and drive 32 km. Turn left onto Itkiinpohjantie. At the 7.8 km mark, turn right onto Kokkojärventie and drive 5.7 km, after which on the right side of the road is a sign for Ukonpolku. From the intersection, there is 200 m to the northern parking area and information point of Ukonsärkkä.
If you want to drive to the southern starting point, you can go around from the west via Ukonsärkänkatu and turn onto Pitkääahontie (left), from where the starting point is about 100 m.
Note. Internet connections do not work in the area, so take a map with you or download the Outdooractive app that tracks your location. There are many forest roads in the area, so it is possible to get lost from the route.

The route is an easy-to-walk path that runs along the ridges.
Tools and equipment
- You need sturdy hiking shoes. On the way to the lean-to, the boardwalks are in poor condition, so you may get your shoes wet; otherwise, the route is on the ridge and passes through dry terrain.
- Bring enough warm clothing and drinks with you.
- It is advisable to bring insect repellent.
- GSM phone does not work in the area, but the trail is clearly visible in the terrain. It is recommended to bring a paper map or download the Outdooractive app.
