History:

In 1653, Count Pietari Brahe founded the town of Brahea at the mouth of the Lieksan River, but it was dissolved in the 1680s. Lieksa, the central town of Lake Pielisjärvi, became the centre of the municipality in the 1870s. In the summer of 1934, a major fire destroyed the centre of the town, but at the same time gave impetus to rebuilding, and so on 1 January 1936 the Lieksa trading district was established. Later, on 1 January 1973, the Lieksan trading house and the municipality of Pielisjärvi were merged to form the town of Lieksan.

Many commercial and residential buildings from the 1920s and 1930s have been preserved in Lieksa, some of which have been restored to reflect the architecture of their time. The streetscape also includes a few residential buildings from the period before the fire of 1934, which are an integral part of Lieksa's urban landscape. You will also see functionalist architectural gems from after the fire in Lieksa, as well as new examples of architectural art.
