Pappilanvaara track 6 km

The descriptive and easy track of Pappilanvaara runs through the cultural landscapes of Ilomantsi town centre.

Description

The Pappilanvaara track dives into a tunnel from the Parppei sports centre. Although the first few hundred metres are along a sidewalk, the track later rewards in many ways. After crossing the track, continue straight. At this point, a non-illuminated connecting trail leading to Ilomantsi town centre turns right, which can be taken as a bonus.

The beginning goes through a park-like environment. Soon, Ilomantsinjärvi lake opens to the left. After circling Hutunniemi along the shore, the track splits into two and becomes one-way. The track climbs to the fields of Pappilanvaara. At the highest point of the track, it is worth stopping to admire the nationally valuable hill scenery opening over Ilomantsinjärvi lake. Ahead stands the Lutheran church of Ilomantsi. The track crosses the sledding hill twice in front of the church. Caution is required here! The downhill can be fast and moderately difficult in slippery conditions.

After a small ascent, the track descends back to the lakeshore and returns along a familiar route to the starting point.

The track is illuminated except for the Pappilanvaara section, but thanks to the lights from nearby areas, it can still be skied in the dark.
