Author tips:
  • In the 1500s, there was a small Orthodox monastery in Kuhasalo, which became deserted according to conclusions from land registers already by the end of the same millennium. In the 1600s, the name changed from Kuhasalo to Kukkosensaari when the wealthy Kukkonen family moved to the area. The current peninsula was an island until the early 1900s.
  • The shores of Kalmonniemi are adorned with pines growing on rocks, on the Kukkosensaari side charming old spruces and numerous decaying trees. The area also grows planted poplars, hybrid aspens, and lodgepole pines. The most observant hiker may find some of the over 50 species of cone-bearing trees.
  • The nature of Kuhasalo surprises with both its abundance and diversity. All species of woodpeckers of Finland have been observed in the Kuhasalo recreational area.
