Kontiolahti Kirkonkylä nature and culture trail
The Kirkonkylä nature and culture trail takes you to the shores of Höytiäinen and beautiful paths. Highlights of the route include Vierevänniemi beach, views from Honkavaara, and the local heritage center with cultural sights.
Description
The Kirkonkylä nature and culture trail is a moderately difficult, approximately 5 km route. It uniquely combines the scenic and cultural-historical sites of Kontiolahti Kirkonkylä. The path runs along the shores of Lake Höytiäinen and opens views to the rugged, partly rocky and lichen-covered terrain shaped by the lake’s lowering. The area features dozens of extraordinary crooked pines. Vierevänniemi beach invites you to refresh yourself on a beautiful sandy beach, and from the top of Honkavaara there is a magnificent panorama of Höytiäinen.
The trail’s cultural landscape lets you sense the history of the area, and a visit to the local heritage center completes the experience. The local heritage museum (Keskuskatu 34) along the route is also open in midsummer. The most demanding section with a steep descent/ascent and steep stairs can be circumvented via an alternative gentler path, making the trail suitable for hikers of varying skill levels. The peaceful forest paths and beautiful landscapes make the route enjoyable for both nature lovers and culture enthusiasts.
Stop for a moment to taste the atmosphere and peace offered by the surroundings. There are also about 15 nature signs along the trail telling about the history and nature of the Kirkonkylä area.
