Kesonsuo nature trail and birdwatching tower

Kesonsuo, the most significant natural oasis bog in North Karelia, is about 20 km from the village of Ilomantsi. You can admire the exceptionally beautiful bog from the birdwatching tower, which is accessible via a 1.1 km nature trail.

Description

Kesonsuo is a birdwatcher's treasure trove where species such as the marsh harrier, wood sandpiper, black-throated diver, short-eared owl, and red-legged plover have been observed. This ornithologically valuable bog area was still at risk in the early 1970s, but in 1976 the first 1400 hectares were protected. The journey to Kesonsuo is an experience in itself, as the road through Kirvesvaara and Hakovaara runs through beautiful rural landscapes. A hiking trail of about one kilometer leads to the birdwatching tower, most of which is on boardwalks. Because the boardwalks are usually submerged, boots are a good gear choice. It is also advisable to bring binoculars and time, as the beauty of the bog is best appreciated by observing peacefully. From the birdwatching tower, there is a view where watery channels and sphagnum moss-covered hummocks paint beautiful patterns on the bog.
