Herajärvi circuit - southern loop

On a trail with many ascents and descents, you gather many of Koli's gems: the waves of Pielinen, the charming village center, summer pastures, the old Mattila farmyard, and Koli's highest peaks.

Description

If you are looking for a route for trail running that lasts several hours, the Southern Koli Loop is a recommended destination for many reasons:

At the start and end point, Kiviniemi, you can enjoy the history of Finnish trail running events. Kiviniemi was the first competition center of the pioneer of Finnish trail running events, the Vaarat Marathon, from 2006 to 2008, when participant numbers ranged from ten to just over a hundred.

The southern loop of the Herajärvi circuit is very diverse and also offers distant views steeped in elevation changes. Mostly, the hills are not quite as steeply featured as on the northern loop of the Herajärvi circuit. There is a lot of easy-to-run sections but also plenty of technical trails that effectively slow down faster footsteps.

Variety is also provided by crossing bodies of water. A cable ferry crosses Sikosalmi next to the starting point, and after about 8 kilometers, you cross the roughly twenty-meter-wide Herajoki using a wading cableway, refreshing your feet.
