Frontline route - war history along the Rukajärvi road
The route is a circular path about 2.5 kilometers long, starting at the Änäkäinen recreational area parking lot. The trail takes travelers to the Winter War and Continuation War defense lines where you can still see battle trenches, firing positions, and restored dugouts.
Description
The informational signs along the route vividly describe frontline life and the area's significance as part of Finland's defense. The terrain consists of varied ridge and forest areas, and from the area, there are sometimes beautiful views of the Änäkäinen lake scenery. The frontline route offers both an impressive nature experience and a moment of reflection in the midst of history.
Location & Parking
From the village of Nurmijärvi on Via Karelia (524), turn east onto Kivivaara Road (5241) and drive about 8 km. There, turn left to the Änäkäinen information point. The area is accessible even in winter because the road through the area is plowed to the Saarijärvi kota hut and its parking area.
There is free parking at the starting point.
