In 1653, Count Pietari Brahe founded the town of Brahea at the mouth of the Lieksa River, but it was terminated in the 1680s. The central locality of Pielisjärvi, Lieksa, grew into the parish center in the 1870s. In the summer of 1934, a great fire severely destroyed the town center, but it also gave a push to new construction, so the Lieksa market town was established on 1.1.1936. Later, on 1.1.1973, Lieksa market town and the municipality of Pielisjärvi were merged to form the city of Lieksa.
Lieksa has preserved many commercial and residential buildings from the 1920s and 1930s, some of which have been renovated to represent the architecture of their era. The streetscape also features a few residential commercial buildings surviving from before the fire of 1934, which are an essential part of the urban environment of Lieksa. On the route, you will also see architectural gems representing functionalism after the Lieksa fire as well as new architectural masterpieces.
