- Four films have been shot in the scenery of Pamilo, the best known probably being Markku Pölönen's "Tukkijätkä". In the late 19th century, the rapids were recorded by I.K. Inha, known as a photographer of Finnish landscapes.
- In the 1950s, Ala-Koitajoki was harnessed for electricity production, and the roar in the riverbed diminished.
Ala-Koitajoki hiking trail network
The versatile Ala-Koitajoki hiking trail network runs along the shores of the Koitajoki River on the border between Joensuu and Ilomantsi. It is possible to take a short day trip to an accessible campfire site or hike up to 35 km along the rushing riverbank.
Description
Another starting point for the Ala-Koitajoki hiking trails with information boards is at Hiiskoski, the other at Pamilonkoski. The section on the Pamilonkoski side begins with an accessible stretch. Leaving from Hiiskoski, you will soon face thrilling but at times rocky and narrow paths.
The river running through the middle of the hiking trails is perhaps Finland’s oldest, formed at the end of the Ice Age as the edge of the glacier melted and waters from Koitere rushed toward what is now the Pielisjoki valley.
The trail network marked with blue signs showcases wilderness nature with numerous rapids and protected areas. Log driving heritage is an important part of the river’s history. The river has always fascinated artists as well.
The trail network has a total of six lean-tos and two modest campfire sites. The lean-to near Pamilonkoski can be reached via an accessible trail. At the same location, there is also an accessible viewpoint for admiring the rapids. Elsewhere, the trail is often rocky and thus challenging to traverse.
Two crossing points and circular routes at both ends enable various trips from short visits to multi-day hikes. Circling the whole riverbank trail network and returning to the starting point totals nearly 35 km. The circular route at the Hiiskoski end is approximately 9 km long and at the Pamilonkoski end about 8 km. The connecting path between these is 8.6 km long.
Contrary to many sources, Ala-Koitajoki is a no-fishing area.
