30-km Hiking Loop at the Southern End of Lake Herajärvi

The loop around the southern end of Lake Herajärvi is a roughly 30-kilometer-long wilderness hiking trail that winds through diverse forests, waterways, and varied terrain.

Description

The trail offers a pleasant route for a 2- to 3-day hiking trip. The hike is best started from the Herajärvi Hiking Center, where you can also stock up on drinking water. There is also a sauna in Heraniemi available for hikers. The hiking trail features rest areas and swimming spots at regular intervals, as well as camping opportunities.

Rocky trails and steep ascents and descents add a challenge to the hike. Crossing bodies of water via a towboat and a wading rope also adds a pleasant variety to the hike.
Along the way, you can explore old tar pits, charcoal kilns, and a kyanite mine. The pristine old-growth forests, with their streamside groves, add a wonderful touch to your scenic experience and immerse you in a world of delightful forest scents.
