Murroojärvi Loop, 9 km

When have you ever rowed while out for a run? On this route, you’ll cross the Lieksanjoki River first on a suspension bridge and then again in a rowboat!

Description

The trail, which starts at the Siikakoski parking lot, first takes you along the banks of the Lieksanjoki River. After a little over 800 meters, you’ll reach the impressive Siikakoski suspension bridge, which you’ll cross for the first time over the Lieksanjoki River, which is about 30 meters wide.

After the bridge, you’ll head upstream either along the “fishing trail” that runs right along the riverbank or along a route that’s slightly higher up. The trails meet again about a kilometer away, so you can choose which route to take. The fishing trail along the riverbank offers views of the rapids but is slower to run than the ridge trail.

About 500 meters past where the trails merge and the Murroonsuvanto lean-to, you’ll have another choice: The fishing trail along the riverbank (1.3 km) and the route straight through the pine forest (600 m) will soon meet again.

Another 500 meters past where the trails merge, you’ll come to a junction where you’ll turn toward Lake Murroojärvi. A multisport-style rowing challenge awaits you at the shore, along with a crossing of over 100 meters across the water, after which you’ll set off to circle Lake Murroola for over 3.5 kilometers.

On the southern shore of Lake Murroojärvi, turn right toward the southwest and run the final 1.5 kilometers through pine forests and boardwalks over open bogs back to the starting point.

Author tips:

Here’s how the waterway crossing works: there’s one boat on each shore. First, you row from east to west. On the west shore, you hook up the boat that’s been waiting there and row back to the east shore. There, you leave one of the boats for the next person to use and row back to the west bank. So you cross the waterway a total of three times! It’s a good idea to set aside half an hour for this.
