Programme 8 days /7 nights

Finnish Lakeland area offers extraordinary venue for learning about the nature and culture combining with the educational aspects. All our guides and suppliers have went through first aid and safety training and each activity has safety plans.

Day 1: Arrival in Finnish Lakeland
Flight arrives in Joensuu (JOE) / Kuopio airport (flight tickets organized by the customer)

Meeting with the local English speaking guide

Transfer to town of Nurmes, to Break Sokos Hotel Bomba

Bomba is a unique resort on the shore of lakes. Break Sokos Hotel Bomba has been renovated in most parts 2016-2017 and totally renewed Spa Bomba must be also experienced. The Karelian Village is an attraction in itself.

Day 2: Getting to know Finnish Nature and learning “Everyman’s rights”
Breakfast will be served at the hotel, short walk/transfer to activity venue

Nature is our home but you have to know, what you can do there. During the day you will learn the concept of Everyman’s rights in Finland; what is allowed to do, what you cannot do without the permission and history of Everyman’s rights. Goal of the activity: to understand nature connection and respect the nature The program will last 5 hours including lunch (divided in shorter periods) In the afternoon possibility to go swimming on the lake / Spa.

Day 3: Outdoor safety skills
Breakfast will be served at the hotel, short walk/transfer to activity venue

During the third day, you will learn what to survive in the forest; how to signal help, how to protect against the elements, how to give basic first aid, how to build a shelter and navigate with the nature signs. Goal of the activity: survival skills in the nature. The program will last 5 hours including lunch (divided in shorter periods).

In the afternoon possibility to go swimming on the lake / Spa.

Day 4: Introduction of carving

Breakfast will be served at the hotel, short walk/transfer to activity venue

In this activity you will learn safe handling of the knife and the basics of carving with knife. Every guest will carve an own butter knife. Goal of the activity: learn safe use of traditional carving tools and understand the importance of them in the past. The program will last 5 hours including lunch (divided in shorter periods).

In the afternoon possibility to go swimming on the lake / Spa.

Day 5: Learning about fishing and wilderness cooking course

Breakfast will be served at the hotel, short walk/transfer to activity venue

Fishing competition from the jetty with fishing guides will teach you, how to fish with a hook and line using worms as a bait (the most traditional way). You will learn the basics of open fire cooking, food preservation and water purification. If the berry and/or mushroom season is on, cooking course will start with picking-up the seasonal products from the forest. Goal of the activity: to understand the meaning of food and cooking in history of humans. The program will last 5 hours including lunch (divided in shorter periods).

Day 6: Getting to know Carelian culture and history of Koli (Finnish National landscape)

Breakfast will be served at the hotel

Guided transfer to Koli Nationalpark (transfer time 1 hour)

Koli is the tallest fell in eastern Finland, and it played an important role in the birth of the Finnish identity. The landscape gave birth to myths and legends, and has been an inspiration to artists, authors and poets uncounted. The Heritage tour takes you from the shores of Lake Pielinen through fields and lands. Along the way, you can witness the beauty of the changing landscape and learn how the Finnish people used to live in the forest.

In the afternoon The Carelian Pie Workshop (= the most famous traditional salty pie in Finland) at the hotel.

Pies are an important part of the region’s food culture, and you get the chance to prepare them together with the “grand old lady” of Karelian cooking. Your hostess, Ritva, bakes Karelian pies with over 30 years of experience. Goal of the activity: to understand the Finnish/Karelian culture and history

Day 7: Getting to know Finnish lakes and famous Finnish soapstone
After breakfast bus transfer to Finnish Youth Centre located in the nature surrounded by lakes (45 minutes)

You will learn canoeing techniques, safety and teamwork. During the canoeing guests will learn to observe lake nature and study water biology helped by instructor. We provide canoes, safety vests, paddles and waterproof bags. After canoeing trip the lunch will be served for the group.

Stone jewellery workshop

Finnish soapstone is one of the treasures from Finnish bedrock. Locally mined stone is the best quality in the world. Stone is easy to work with hand tools and gives you satisfaction of doing art with your hands. Guests will have at the end of workshop knowledge and skill to work with soaps stone. Instructor will teach and help guests to start creative process of creating own pendant. Instructor will give basic information of tools and techniques to work with soapstone. Stone is easy to work with hand tools. Note: Inform us if you have dust allergy. Work is dusty so take it into consideration when choosing clothing.

Bus transfer back to the accommodation venue

Day 8: Departure day
Breakfast at the hotel

Bus transfer to Joensuu (JOE) / Kuopio airport 

Finnair flight to Helsinki-Vantaa (HEL) airport (flight tickets organized by the customer)
