Koli, which belongs to the city of Lieksa, is the
most famous tourist resort in the whole province - people have been
visiting in Koli for over 100 years.
Koli locates on the same side of Pielinen as Juuka and therefore it
is geographically closer to the center of Juuka than the city of Lieksa.
Koli isn't famous only because of its exceptional height: the queue of
high hills, the wide lake of Pielinen with its hundreds of islands,
green forests as far as the eye can see and the varied beauty of Koli
form the incomparable national landscape of which the magnificent Koli
The wildness of Koli has always appealed to people, but the
habitation of the hills is surprisingly young compared to neighbour
areas. Of course, the area of the Koli with its view is already know in
the old map of Käkisalmi, which was made in 1650, but the hill's name
was "the Black Slope" (Mustarinta) - the name refers to
the great pagan lords instead of human habitation. According to
heritage knowlegde and historic references, the pagan lords mastered the
Koli influencing widely to the local populations, stages of life and
destinies. People also arrived far from around Karelia to conciliate the
lords. Koli has also been a place where ancient Lapps used to live and a
place where the judgements were executed.
Multiple Finnish artists have admired and immortalized the ancient hills, Karelidis. The most famous of them are Eero Järnefelt and Jean Sibelius with their spouses. For example, on the wall of Demon's Church (one
of the most famous caves in Koli) there's a writing made by Järnefelt:
"One secret, one spirit, the fortune of us both, is this church, the
holiness we will always remember" (Yksi salaisuus, yks henki, yks onni kumpaisenki, on kirkko tämä, sen pyhyyttä muistelemma aina), Eero and Fanni, 1893.
There's also lots of else to see in the village of Koli:
in the center of the village there's the souvenir shop of Koli Season,
tourist information of Koli and the gallery of Kulmakivi, Gastropub
Kolin Ryynänen with its accommodation and the club house of Koli. At the
harbor there's the harbor restaurant of Alamaja. At the top of the
Koli, there's the Hotel Koli with its spa and souvenir shops.
