Level of difficulty: Average

Nature trail of Koppalo is located in the primeval forests of Petrovaara and it leads the visitor through a scenic preserve. The trail is 3,3km long and you’ll come across burning areas, field of jagged rocks, ponds, swamps, old forests, and to top it all, a stunning landscape which you can admire from the top of the hill of Pitkävaara. The area is rich in species due to the old age of the forests. You can, for example, see some of the more rare Finnish species like a shining red slime mold and a pale pinesap. Nature trail of Koppalo is also known as the Path of Ants.

How to get there: Drive from the center of Juuka towards Kaavi for 18km. Then turn right on Koppalanjärventie and drive forward 3.5km. The sign post on the right marks the starting spot of the trail.
