The level of difficulty: Hard

If you want to take a trip to another world, direct your steps to the Mined Gate of Vuokko. The path is 1,5 kilometers long and even the former president of Finland, Urho Kalevi Kekkonen, has hiked the route. The Mined Gate is a 700 meters long gulley, which is formed as a result of the melting of the continental glacier. The gulley appears unexpectedly to the middle of a coniferous forest, between two vertical cliffs. The gulley is also called “the Fantasy World” – at the bottom of the gulley, there are the fascinating Stream of the Gate (Porttipuro) and several round stones that are covered by a soft, green moss. An old legend tells, that the Mined Gate has been a place where healers and witches used to arrange ceremonies – sick people were transported through the legendary Mined Gate, and that drove away the bad spirits and diseases. At the northern side of the gulley, there’s a holy place where people used to sacrifice food and animals - an amphitheater, which is made by the Mother Nature. At the ledge of the Mined Gate, there’s a campfire place, which is an excellent place to admire the flourishing gulley of the Mined Gate from above.

Route: Turn to Nurmes, drive 19km and turn left to Tervavaarantie. Drive 8km and turn right to a forest road. Drive one kilometer and leave your car on the yard of a little deserted house. The path of the Mined Gate starts from here, at a spot with a post sign.
