FAQ

What’s the easiest way to book a holiday cottage?

The easiest way is to book online on the VisitKarelia.fi website. You can find all available options by selecting the region (optional), type of accommodation, check-in date, departure date, holiday period (optional) and number of guests. Then click on the magnifying glass to search.  The available options will be displayed on the screen. You can change the order according to name or price (lowest or highest). Additional search options (for example, pets allowed) can be viewed by clicking on the + sign beneath the magnifying glass. Details can be found by clicking on the name of the holiday cottage or by clicking on “Book”. Once you have found a holiday cottage you like, click on “Book” in the top-right corner and fill in the details.

If you would like personal service, please contact our sales service: sales@visitkarelia.fi or tel. +358 207 434 660.

Can I book a holiday cottage for less than a week?

Depending on the season, holiday cottages can be booked for 1 night or more.

During the summer season, the changeover day for lakeside cottages is usually Saturday and the shortest booking period is one week. Hillside cottages at Koli, which usually share a beach, can be booked in summertime for as little as 1 night. The only exception is during Midsummer, when the minimum stay is 3 nights.

How can I pay?

If you book online, you can pay either just the deposit (20% of the rent plus a delivery fee of €20) or the full amount immediately by credit card or using an online banking service. After you have made your booking (usually on the following weekday) you will receive driving instructions, instructions for picking up the keys and contact information for the owner or caretaker by e-mail. You will also receive the final invoice if you have paid just the deposit.

If you make a booking through our sales service, you will receive an invoice for the deposit and final invoice, a description of the holiday cottage and a booking confirmation either by e-mail or post.

I don’t have a credit card. How can I make and pay for a booking?

Once you have found a suitable holiday cottage on our website, simply contact our sales service: sales@visitkarelia.fi or tel. +358 207 434 660. We will then book the holiday cottage for you and send the invoice by e-mail, so you can pay it from your bank account.

Will I be notified once my payment has been confirmed?

You will not be notified separately by us, but if you book online you will receive payment confirmation by e-mail.

What does the rent include?

The rent includes free use of the holiday cottage (or other type of accommodation) and sauna (where applicable). Holiday cottages are usually furnished and come with kitchen utensils and tableware. Firewood is also included in the rent, unless otherwise specified. At lakeside cottages, use of a rowing boat is usually included in the rent (check the cottage description).

Can I rent bed linen and towels?

Blankets and pillows are included in the rent. Bed linen can usually be ordered in advance when making your booking. The price is listed in the cottage description or when making the booking. Some cottages do not provide bed linen, so make sure in advance. Similarly, some cottages provide bed linen free of charge, so always check the cottage description.

Do I have to notify the owner regarding my expected time of arrival?

Check the driving instructions to see if you are asked to notify the owner or caretaker of your expected time of arrival. The contact information of the owner or caretaker is also provided in the driving instructions.

What time does the holiday cottage become available?

Holiday cottages are usually available from 4:00pm on the arrival day until noon on the departure day, unless otherwise agreed. Refer to the cottage description for possible exceptions.

How long can I stay at the holiday cottage on the departure day?

The holiday cottage can be used until noon on the departure day, unless otherwise specified in the cottage description.

Can I bring additional guests to the holiday cottage?

The maximum number of guests permitted to stay at the holiday cottage is equal to the number of beds in the cottage description, unless otherwise agreed. The owner is entitled to charge extra for guests exceeding the number of beds, even if additional beds cannot be provided.

Can I bring pets to the cottage?

Pets are allowed only at holiday cottages where they are specifically permitted. Look for the dog symbol in the cottage description and the text “pets allowed”. If you are planning to bring a pet to the holiday cottage, this information must be provided when making your booking. If you would like to bring more than one pet, permission must be requested from the owner; in this case, please contact our sales service. At some holiday cottages an additional fee is charged for pets. Check the cottage description for details.

Remember always to clean up any pet hair from the cottage and furniture before your departure, as well as any mess that may have been made in the yard. Make sure too that your pet does not cause any damage to the cottage or yard. The owner is entitled to compensation for any damage caused by your pet.

Can I bring a caravan to the cottage? Can I set up a tent outside the cottage? Can I bring my own hot tub?

Caravans, tents and hot tubs are not permitted without the owner’s permission.

Do all cottages have their own sauna?

The vast majority of cottages have their own sauna. Check the cottage description to make sure.

I have allergies, so is it safe to book a cottage where pets are not allowed?

The fact that pets are not allowed is not a guarantee that the cottage is suitable for guests with allergies. It may be that pets are not allowed simply to avoid damage. If you have allergies and want to make sure that the cottage is suitable for you, please contact our sales service.

Can I fish without a permit?

Angling with worm bait and ice fishing are everyman’s rights in Finland, while other forms of fishing require a license that can be purchased from R-kiosks or online. Young people under the age of 18 and seniors over the age of 65 do not require a fishing license.

Is there a specific arrival day and departure day?

Depending on the season, holiday cottages can be booked for 1 night or more.

During the summer season, the changeover day for lakeside cottages is usually Saturday and the shortest booking period is one week. Hillside cottages at Koli, which usually share a beach, can be booked in summertime for as little as 1 night. The only exception is during Midsummer, when the minimum stay is 3 nights.

Holiday cottages are usually available from 4:00pm on the arrival day until noon on the departure day. Refer to the cottage description for possible exceptions.

What if I have to cancel my booking?

If you cancel your booking at least 28 days prior to the beginning of the rental period (but at least 60 days for bookings for the period 27 December – 11 January), any rent that has already been paid shall be refunded with the exception of the deposit and delivery fee. If the cancellation is made less than 28 days prior to the beginning of the rental period (or less than 60 days for bookings for the period 27 December – 11 January), the total amount of the rent shall be withheld.

Do I have to clean the cottage myself before leaving?

At most cottages you can order final cleaning in advance and enjoy your holiday right to the end. The price is listed in the cottage description or when making the booking. If you order final cleaning, or if it is included in the price, you are still expected to do tidy up before leaving. This includes washing the dishes and putting them away, taking out the trash, and collecting any bottles or cans. Furniture should be put back in its place, and if you ordered bed linen, it should be left in a pile on top of the bed. Remember to clean the grill if it has been used. Any leftover food should be thrown away or taken with you.

If you want to do the final cleaning yourself, remember the following: take out the carpets and shake them thoroughly, vacuum the floors and wipe them with a damp mop, wipe the tables and counters with a damp cloth, hang up the bedclothes outside to air, wash the dishes and put them away, clean the fridge and microwave, wash the sauna and toilet (including the toilet bowl), and take out the trash. The final cleaning should be done in full on the day of departure. If you used the grill, clean the grill when it is hot but throw away the coals only when they are cold. Cleaning instructions can also be found in the FAQ section.

Who should I contact if I encounter a problem at the cottage?

The owner or caretaker should be informed immediately about any shortcomings or faults with your holiday cottage so that the problem can be remedied as soon as possible. If the problem is not remedied, then contact our sales service (weekdays 9am to 5pm, tel. +358 207 434 660 or sales@visitkarelia.fi
