The North Karelia Municipal Education and Training Consortium is an education and development organisation owned by 13 municipalities. The municipal education and training consortium operates across the entire region. Education and other services are provided by the vocational colleges of North Karelia located in Joensuu, Kitee, Lieksa, Niittylahti, Nurmes, Outokumpu and Valtimo and the North Karelia Adult Education Centre which provides education in different parts of Finland according to customer needs. The most important types of education provided are vocational upper secondary education and training, vocational adult education and training, apprenticeship training, liberal adult education and summer university education. The consortium is also involved in the operations of the Humak University of Applied Sciences. The North Karelia Municipal Education and Training Consortium has received a quality award for vocational education and training in 2004, 2008 and 2012.
Luovi Vocational College is Finland's largest provider and developer of special needs vocational education and training. The following qualifications can be obtained at the Luovi Liperi unit: driver, artisan, property maintenance operative, housekeeper, cook, machinist, vocational qualification in business and administration, builder, site facilities operative and warehouse operative. The Joensuu unit provides adult education and training.
Eastern Finland Sports Institute (ISLO) is part of the Finnish sports institute network. The institute provides education leading to a further qualification/specialist qualification and preparatory training for basic vocational education. The courses normally last one school year and the application period is in spring.
Joensuu Conservatory provides basic and vocational education in music. Students of the Study Programme in Music Performance have a choice of three lines of study: classical, pop & jazz and folk music.
