Nature
Tohmajärvi is influenced by its situation in the Lake Ladoga basin. There is a large diversity of plants and animals and Tohmajärvi is well known among bird watchers. There is internationally recognized area of Sääperi Lake and marshland in Värtsilä. The Jänisjoki River and Trail (Jänispolku) offer many opportunities to see and experience local flora and fauna.
Nature trail Aconitum and Ukonhattulehto (Monkshood Grove)
Aconitum nature trail is 6 km long but the path can be easily broken up into shorter sections. There are three places to start the walk: the Car Park near by the church, (Kirkkotie
590), the Old Cemetery and Turusenniemi. In Turusenniemi there is a fireplace and a beach.
Monkshood (Aconitum) is almost two metre tall, summer flowering plant.(The plant is very poisonous) Piilovaara Ukonhattulehto is the largest concentration of Monkshood in Finland.
Jänispolku (Nature Trail) and Jänisjoki River
Jänispolku is a 38km long trail following the Jänisjoki river from Vatala to Värtsilä. There are a number of bivouac camps provided along the route.
Jänisjoki river offers the experience of the deep forest and an excitement through the rapids. On the river banks a visitor will find a series of landing places and there are fireplaces, bivouac shelters and latrines.
Fishing permits can be bought at the Neste Service Station in Tohmajärvi.
