Kirkkoniemi

The Evangelical Lutheran church (1756) is the oldest wooden church in North Carelia. Near by the church is a monument for those who fought in the Winter and Continuation War 1939-1944.

Other monuments in church grounds are a memorial to those who fell and were left behind in Carelia, (now Russian Republic of Karelia) and Bishop Eino Sormunen's gravestone and a memorial to the people of Tohmajärvi who died of hunger during 1865-68.

The Parish Hall Café Handicraft sales exhibition and the church are open in the summer time.

Parish Museum and Nyman House


"The King of the Carelia", Gabriel Wallenius, owned the coach house which is the parish museum novadays. In the grounds a visitor will find out-buildings and a windmill belonging to author Maiju Lassila.

The Nyman house was North Carelia's second oldest pharmacy and now the house is a museum. In Nymans there are everyday objects and pharmacy from ages past.

Open in the summer time. Entrance fee.

Puun Sielu (Spirit of Wood)

In the exhibition of  "Spirit of Wood"  can be seen many different artists and wood workers creations. Wooden arts sales exhibition, training and programme services.

Open daily, groups and tours by arrangement.

Facts about Tohmajärvi

Nature

Tohmajärvi is influenced by its situation in the Lake Ladoga basin. There is a large diversity of plants and animals and Tohmajärvi is well known among bird watchers. There is internationally recognized area of Sääperi Lake and marshland in Värtsilä. The Jänisjoki River and Trail (Jänispolku) offer many opportunities to see and experience local flora and fauna.

Nature trail Aconitum and Ukonhattulehto (Monkshood Grove)

Aconitum nature trail is 6 km long but the path can be easily broken up into shorter sections. There are three places to start the walk: the Car Park near by the church, (Kirkkotie 590), the Old Cemetery and Turusenniemi. In Turusenniemi there is a fireplace and a beach.

Monkshood (Aconitum) is almost two metre tall, summer flowering plant.(The plant is very poisonous) Piilovaara Ukonhattulehto is the largest concentration of Monkshood in Finland.

Jänispolku (Nature Trail) and Jänisjoki River

Jänispolku is a 38km long trail following the Jänisjoki river from Vatala to Värtsilä. There are a number of bivouac camps provided along the route.

Jänisjoki river offers the experience of the deep forest and an excitement through the rapids. On the river banks a visitor will find a series of landing places and there are fireplaces, bivouac shelters and latrines.

Fishing permits can be bought at the Neste Service Station in Tohmajärvi.
