Where is North Karelia?



When you are in Finland you are in the easternmost country of the continental European Union, and North Karelia is its easternmost province. In Virmajärvi, in the village of Hattuvaara in the municipality of Ilomantsi, lies the easternmost point of the continental European Union.

Of the 5,3 million people who live in Finland, 166.000 live in Karelia, which at 21.500 m2 is roughly the same size as The Netherlands.
